早稲田大学野球部
早大を象徴するのは、野球を武士道になぞらえ「一球入魂」の言葉を学んだ「学生野球の父」飛田穂洲。野球指導者として活躍し「グラウンドは道場である」の名言を残す。
慶應義塾大学野球部
Enjoy Baseballを提唱したのは慶大監督を2期18年務め、8度のリーグ優勝を飾った前田祐吉。アメリカの「ベースボール」に学んで日本の根性野球を嫌い、実証と合理性を重視、脱帽してのお辞儀や丸刈りにも反対した。
スポーツ推薦制度
早稲田
2001年に「スポーツ早稲田」の復活を奥島孝康総長が2002年にスポーツ推薦制度を導入。2003年にはスポーツ科学部を設置。体育会運動部の全43種目で日本一を目指し、野球部は最重点クラブに指定された。
慶應義塾
宮島司体育会理事は「慶大・体育会報」で「部員である前に塾生であり、塾生の本分をわきまえてこそ、体育会の部員としての存在意義もある」と述べ、文武両道を主張した。
※補足
大学とは異なり、慶應義塾高校では、2003年にスポーツや文芸面で優れた成績を収めた生徒を対象とした推薦入試制度（AO入試）が導入された。合格するには「中学3年の2学期の成績が38以上」「スポーツや文芸面での顕著な活動成績」が必要。「野球部枠」は存在しないが、毎年10名程度の合格者が野球部に入部している。なお、入学後の学業成績に関する特別扱いはなく、大学への内部進学の条件は一般入試組と同じ。
